Pineapple Plantation Hawaii History. Throughout the 90s, luxury homesites were developed within kapalua resort, including the plantation estates, coconut grove and pineapple hill estates. By the 1930s, hawai`i was famous as the pineapple capital of the world. He started his first plantation in wahiawa a year later and built a pineapple cannery the following year. Pineapples arrived in hawaii in 1527, and the residents here called it “hala kahiki” translating to “foreign fruit.”
This wahi pana (sacred site) serves as a reminder of the host culture and long history in the area now called kapalua. In 1899, james dole, just 22 years old, moved to honolulu from massachusetts and purchased 64 acres of land in the central plains of oahu. The fruit, peel, and juice of pineapples is said to remove warts. Founded in 1901 by james dole, this plantation acted as one of the many catalysts in the history of exploitation of land and resources through the pineapple industry, and now acts as a popular tourist destination. They call these sugar babies, and they’re often found at the kumu farms stand at the maui tropical plantation. The hawaiian pineapple company james dole had founded was now processing over 200,000 tons of pineapple a year, helping to make pineapple hawaii’s second largest industry.
The pineapple industry took off from there.
By the 1940s, eight pineapple companies operated in hawai`i. They call these sugar babies, and they’re often found at the kumu farms stand at the maui tropical plantation. Pineapple exporters began to develop their own pineapple plantations in hawai’i and in 1891 john kidwell started the first pineapple plantation on oahu. Captain john kidwell is most often credited with founding hawaii�s pineapple industry. When american missionaries first arrived in hawaii in 1820, pineapple was found growing wild and in gardens and small plots. This was the beginning of the pineapple empire.
